Scott Hawkins for Governor Takes on Crime Wave in New Web Video

| Press Release

We need to arrest the crime wave, by untying the hands of our police and prosecutors and prioritizing law enforcement,” declares Hawkins

(ANCHORAGE, AK) – Scott Hawkins for Governor today released a new web video, promising to turn back the crime wave spawned by Senate Bill 91, which was approved by Governor Bill Walker and lawmakers in 2016.

“The reasons for the current crime spree are not complicated,” stated Hawkins. “Refusing to prosecute first and second time offenders -- and even many repeat offenders -- has led to more crime, plain and simple.”

According to preliminary FBI crime statistics, Alaska crime rates increased substantially in 2017 in nearly every category. Motor vehicle thefts in the Anchorage area alone increased more than 56% in 2017 over 2016. Property crimes increased more than 12% in the same time period.

“We are witnessing the consequences of bad public policy,” observed Hawkins. “Protecting Alaska citizens should be job one for state and local government, but Senate Bill 91 elevated the interests of dangerous and habitual offenders. We can and must do better. Getting Alaska back on track starts with shaking up Juneau and prioritizing government’s responsibilities. First and foremost on my list will be cracking down on crime by untying the hands of our police and prosecutors and punishing repeat and/or dangerous criminals.”
